Marbled Clay: A Two-Part Sunday Series
Join us at El Studio for a two-part Sunday series on marbling — the art of marrying two clays into one swirling, one-of-a-kind surface. Because you already know your way around the wheel, we get to skip the basics and spend our time on the good part: pattern, movement, and the small technical shifts that make marbled work sing.
This series runs Sunday, October 18th and 25th, from 2–5pm. In the first session you'll learn how to blend and layer clay bodies into a marbled block, then throw with it — which asks for a lighter hand than you're used to, since too much water or one pull too many will blur the pattern into mud. That restraint is the whole lesson, and it'll make you a better thrower on plain clay too. In the second session you'll trim your pieces, which is where the magic happens: every pass of the tool cuts deeper and reveals more of the pattern hiding under the surface. Then you'll add handles, feet, and carved details to finish them off.
It's not about perfection or productivity. Marbling is a practice in letting go — you can guide the pattern, but you can never fully control it, and that's exactly the point. You'll open the kiln to something you couldn't have drawn ahead of time.
You'll leave with a few marbled pieces and a technique you'll want to keep chasing.

This series is for anyone who has taken a wheel class, series, or workshop with us before — you don't need to be good, you just need to have done it once. If you've thrown somewhere else and want to join, email us and we'll find out if it's a fit.

The Aftermath
Please be patient, pottery takes time!
It takes about 6 weeks to prepare your pieces, so please wait until then before reaching out. We finish marbled work with a clear glaze so the pattern stays front and center. We're a small team processing pieces as fast as ceramics allows, and it's hard for us to keep up with messages. Thank you for your patience!
Once your pieces are ready, our team will email you with pick-up information. Please sign up with an email you actively check.
Cancellations
We understand that things can come up at the last minute. That's why we'll give you a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before the first session starts. To cancel, please email us at ocislyceramics@gmail.com.
Cancellations after that point won't be refunded. Since we only offer workshops occasionally, we'll try to move you into a future one or offer other studio activities instead.
If you miss the first class, we'll try to schedule solo studio time so you can catch up, but we can't promise it — the second session builds directly on what you make in the first. If you can't pick up your pieces on the last day, we'll hold them at the studio for 1 month.
